The bus network A bus network has no switches or repeaters. All stations are connected directly to a linear transmission medium or bus. A transmission from any one station can be received by all other stations. In order to maintain an orderly sequence, a form of access control is enforced and only one device is allowed to transmit data at any one time. The most commonly used medium access control is known as carrier sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD).
Types of local networks
Although manufacturers tend to use the term âlocal networkâ to cover a wide range of products, four main types can be distinguished: micro-networks, LANs, high-speed networks and PABXs (private automatic branch telephone exchanges). The most simple networks are those designed to interconnect specific microcomputers. These may be supplied either by the manufacturer or by a third-party vendor; they are usually relatively cheap, slow and have low capacity. LANs are general-purpose local networks that support a wide variety of devices, including mainframes, minicomputers, terminals and printers. Some LANs carry voice and images as well as data. The most common forms of LAN are bus networks using coaxial cable (for example, Ethernet) and ring networks using twisted pair and fibre optics (for example, IBMâs Token Ring). The high-speed local network (HSLN) is used to provide high-speed data communication, typically for file and bulk data transfer between mainframes and mass storage systems. The PABX (sometimes referred to as the computerized branch exchange (CBX)) is a digital in-house branch exchange which can handle both voice and data traffic. Both LAN and HSLN use packet switching, whereas PABX uses circuit switching.
